“Photographing the Human
Experience is a concept I came up with when I started to freelance upon moving back to New England. For years I was a news photographer exclusively, and after I went out on my own, I needed something to describe the different types of work that I was shooting. Whether it’s shooting a wedding, bike race, or my niece’s birthday party, there are universal themes that interconnect them. I consider that the human experience.” -Ed

Self Portrait on my 30th Birthday
Ed Collier was raised in Lunenburg, Massachusetts where he discovered photography in high school as an alternative to health class. He fell in love with the photographic process, and continued his education at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
Inspired by a Blues music pilgrimage to the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Ed discovered a talent for photojournalism, and ventured out into a newspaper career. After several instant-noodle-fueled internships throughout the midwest, Ed finally settled in at the Times of Northwest Indiana, the state's second largest newspaper, where he spent five years (99-04) as a staff photographer. Wanting to be closer to family, Ed and his wife, Azure, moved back to Central Massachusetts in Autumn 2004, and currently reside in Lancaster. Ed's daily freelance work can be seen in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette and The Boston Globe.
Ed has photographed subjects throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. He has photographed Blues Musicians in Mississippi, Snake Handlers in West Virginia, Inebriated Icelanders in Reykjavik, and State Fair Queens in Indiana. All of his adventures have taught Ed one thing: that we all are going through the same human experience. Ed is here to take the pictures.
Ed speaks French fluently, and is currently learning Spanish and Italian independently. He plans to tackle German next. Ed is an avid cyclist and amateur racer, he plays and teaches harmonica, and is an experienced skier and sea kayaker.
In 2007 Ed was hired as the Executive Director and Race Coordinator of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, America’s second oldest bicycle race.

Ed has always wanted to shoot in Montana and Nebraska. Ed has spent quite a bit of time at Lake Tahoe, and South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Ed loves hiking and skiing in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Ed has worked as a photographer in New Jersey, New Mexico, New York,(NY) and North Carolina. Ed has travel and photojournalism contacts in Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and South Carolina. Ed has photographed in Tennessee, Texas, and Utah. Ed also loves to ski, kayak, and hike in Vermont. Ed has been a wedding photojournalist in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Washington state. Ed has photographed snake handlers in West Virginia, sea kayaking in Wisconsin, and rodeo cowboys from Wyoming.
