As a photojournalist
for more than a decade, I am fortunate in that I can still remember most of my assignments. Some of the details can be a little sketchy, but for the most part, I can recall quite a bit. I am so lucky to have my job. I’m allowed to see so many amazing moments. This was one of my first assignments as an intern at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. I had the assignment to go to the Little Sisters of the Poor ministry in Pittsburgh on Ash Wednesday. I really didn’t have too much information to go on, but I learned that at the shelter, a priest would be giving ashes to residents who were too ill or unable to make it to service. This woman, Eileen Stack, couldn’t make it to church, or even speak for that matter, and when the priest touched her forehead, she seemed so appreciative.
